When You Don’t Know Enough to Share Your Faith

Practical steps to move forward

We All Start Somewhere

None of us start off knowing everything about the Bible. Maybe you’re a brand new believer, maybe your parents never read the Bible to you, or perhaps it’s been a long time since you’ve picked up a Bible, and you’ve forgotten. This lack of knowledge can make it hard to feel confident sharing what we believe. Regardless of the reason, just know that you're not alone. All of us begin our journey with the Bible, knowing nothing. Even if we’ve been Christians for years, there’s always something new to learn about God, our Bibles, and Jesus.

Not Knowing is Not a Problem

But not knowing enough isn’t a reason to fear sharing what you know about Jesus. You don’t need to be an expert in theology or have an answer to every biblical question to have meaningful conversations with your friends. The Bible is full of people who, despite their spiritual immaturity and limited understanding, were used by God to speak the good news of Jesus to thousands of people. Think of the disciples. They were fishermen, accountants, and one was a member of an underground militia! None of them were scholars. Yet they were entrusted with telling the world about Jesus. Not knowing enough is not a problem for God.

God Teaches Us

In the book of James, it says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5). Knowing more about the Bible and growing in our wisdom to speak about it is a prayer that God always answers. One night, Jesus told his disciples that he was about to die and they would be responsible for carrying on his mission in the world (John 13:33-14:14). Naturally, the disciples were overwhelmed. But Jesus comforts them by saying he will send his Holy Spirit to teach them everything they need to know and remind them of everything he did (John 14:16 15:26-27). If you don’t feel you know enough to talk about Jesus with others, ask God to help! It’s a prayer he will always answer.

Practical Steps to Move Forward

1. Study One Book At A Time: All Christians are called to know God’s word well. So begin by reading and studying one book of the Bible that interests you.

2. Join a Study Group: The best way to study the Bible is with others. Join a Bible study in your church, or ask a leader in your church to read the Bible with you.

3. Share Small: You don’t need answers to all the hard questions to talk about Jesus. It’s enough to talk about what you do know. How Jesus changed your life, and why you love Jesus. You’ll be surprised how much you know and how the Holy Spirit will help fill the gaps.
